Our story
A roving platform for Canadian singer-songwriters.
Built on the classic "in the round" format, the award-winning Blue Jay Sessions creates an authentically rare space where the barrier between the stage and the audience is removed. What started as a one-off event in 2019 has grown organically into one of the most celebrated songwriters' showcases in Canada, known for its commitment to high-calibre performance and the raw, unrehearsed magic of collaborative storytelling.
The strength of the sessions lies in the staggering diversity of talent that has sat in its circle. Blue Jay Sessions have been proud to host a wide spectrum of Canadian voices, from country powerhouses like Shantaia, Hailey Benedict, Andrew Hyatt and Nice Horse, to the soulful pop of Haidee, the hip-hop artistry of K-Riz or Tea Fannie, the alt-soul of ZENON, and the acclaimed folk and roots perspectives of artists like Noah Derksen and Jade Turner. By ignoring genre silos and focusing strictly on the craft of the song, we’ve created a platform where every lineup offers something unexpected and undeniably world-class.
This dedication to the craft has earned the series significant industry recognition across the country. To date, the Blue Jay Sessions has won multiple Country Music Alberta Awards for its contribution to the province’s music scene and has been honoured with four CCMA Award nominations since 2021. Earning this kind of hardware as an independent pop-up series is no easy feat; it is a testament to the quality of singer-songwriters that Canada is lucky to have. (We’re lucky to have ‘em sing with us too!)
What sets a session apart is the spontaneous electricity of the night. Because artists share the stage simultaneously, the audience is treated to a "one-night-only" experience filled with improvised harmonies, shared stories, and the kind of camaraderie that only happens when top-tier musicians are given the freedom to play off one another. It is this authentic atmosphere that has allowed Blue Jay Sessions to scale the series from intimate Calgary rooms to sold-out pop-ups in Vancouver, Saskatoon and beyond, maintaining a loyal following of fans and industry professionals along the way.
As the Blue Jay Sessions continues to evolve, its mission remains rooted in advocacy for the underrepresented singer-songwriter. It truly takes pride in its important role as a curator and community-buildering platfirl, providing a professional, inclusive stage for established stars and emerging voices to be heard.
“We invite you to join us for an evening that celebrates top-notch original Canadian music. Blue Jay Sessions is an experience where the songs come first, the laughs (or tears!) come second, and the stories stay with you long after the final note has been sung.” - Dan Clapson
